About the artist

Mary Corrigan StjernI have pursued my interest in art since childhood. Throughout my life I have occasionally taken art lessons and created artwork. Upon retirement from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 2011, I happily began doing more artwork. My art compositions are created from places I and my family and friends have visited and photographed. I use these reference photos in my art studio to paint the details and beauty as I interpret them.

As a member of the Springfield Art Association, I have enjoyed their pastel workshops and exhibits. In the fall of 2012, I was accepted as a juried member in pastel at the Prairie Art Alliance [PAA]. I am also a member of the Illinois Prairie Pastel Society [IPPS], and have enjoyed the comradery with fellow artists in a weekly critique class.

In 2016, the Prairie Art Alliance merged with the Springfield Art Association; as a juried artist, I'm now a member of the SAA Collective at the Springfield Art Association.

I look forward to a greater involvement with other artists, participating in local exhibits and showing and selling my artwork.

Pastel is my favorite medium for my paintings. Often I begin an artwork on sanded art paper with an underpainting of turpenoid wash mixed with oil paints. I prefer to paint on sanded UART paper though my earlier artworks were done on Wallis sanded art paper.

I offer for sale prints of various sizes (without mats or frames) and cards (with envelopes) produced from my original pastel paintings. For information about my artwork, for information about purchasing prints and cards, or if you have other questions, see Portfolio or please contact me.
